Too Much Interaction and Complexity Leads to a Need for Delegation

When the airport is busy, the flow manager does not have time to perform all of the necessary tasks. Although safety is never compromised, use of the runway is not as efficient as it could be. The following tasks can be delegated to the computer:

  • Monitoring aircraft progress
  • Calculation of ETAs
    • using different aircraft performance characteristics
    • incorporating wind/weather effects
  • Runway scheduling
    • light aircraft must be far behind aircraft
    • heavy aircraft can follow light aircraft closely
    • simultaneous landing on crossing runways (for certain airlines only)
  • Aircraft instructions
    • change speed, vector (i.e. fly off track temporarily) or hold
